Your discussion of the fake Super Bowl halftime show reminded me of this gem from Nirvana when they performed on Top of the Pops with a similar live vocal performance. Seems like they took your suggestion to heart!

Speaking of the RHCP, here's an appearance by Fishbone on Soul Train. Note their complete disinterest in actually miming to their song (check out how the drums set up, for instance). I actually saw this when it was broadcast, and my friend and I were howling with laughter!

In "Dr. Damian Handzy’s Facts That’ll Fuck Y’Up", fact #3 is fucked up. In Richmond VA the Kanawah Canal passes under the C&O railroad which passes under I-95 which is frequently overflown by airplanes:

Also, very close by is the Triple Crossing, the only place in America where three competing rail lines cross each other:

A friend of mine works for the NFL. He says the since they have only 12 minutes to setup the halftime show they worried about audio issues with the instruments. I don't know why can handle Microphones but not instruments. Great show as always.

Perhaps another reason for not letting performers play live at the Superbowl is in case they play or say something unexpected and politically charged.

Hey George. I know you don't like to speak ill of other performers, and I admire that. So you may already be aware of what I'm about to say, and choose not to bring it up.

I suspect that the main reason the Chili Peppers didn't play live is because those guys CANNOT SING. I saw a recording of them at Woodstock 2, and I am not exaggerating when I say that was some of the worst singing I've ever heard. It sounded like they were utterly tone-deaf.

Now perhaps I'm being unfair; maybe the sound setup at Woodstock 2 made it impossible for them to hear themselves. I don't know. But whatever the cause, their awful inability to find a pitch in at least one insance does suggest itself as a possible reason why they wouldn't play live at the Super Bowl.
